"Work or Training?: Choose your future frustration

It never fails, whenever I meet a former colleague of the race, after telling the life, there is the same theme: our frustration with the job situation / career in which we live. A conversation is such that we have recently had Catuxa and I through the mail, so you will dedicate this post and I hope you take it with humor with which it is written.

In the life of every student, during the race or at the end it comes the time when we must choose between working or further training. It is true that there is always a decision made freely, rather it is the circumstances that decide for us, but either option will surely determine our future careers and also our future "personal frustration. Obviously, this "vital option" occurs in all races and professions, but in the case of the Library, we can introduce a progressive labor (a doctor not ever start as an assistant in medicine), do that as librarians / documentary, the decision even more difficult.

Consider first the first option: the full foray into the world of work. In this occasion, I will not refer to works that have no connection with our formation, which could also be the case, but I will focus on the specific work of our profession, though, as all who carry a moving time for our little world professional know (and those who do not know you had better make the idea), the chances of finding a job according to our degree (Diploma or Degree) are very disappointing.

Although the field is very wide and can play a key role in the private market for the business world are big unknowns. We can hardly name a few exceptions of private sector jobs, as is the case of documentary media or increasingly work in documentary business, especially doing work cataloging. But the reality is we have not found our site.

In the public sector expectations are not much better: only we are an almost inexhaustible quarry of highly qualified library assistants. Yes, we must be realistic, our best employment options, or at least more numerous, are eligible for a library assistant post, documentation or file through the appropriate course of opposition.

This is where the first obstacle arises to which we must face: it appears that library work can make anyone, no need specific training, only to be ordered and you like reading. That means, when oppositional competition can be fierce: they often face other letters mostly graduates, not yet having our training library, can compete in terms of capacity rote. Finally, with effort, patience and luck, we can access a library assistant plaza or at least to the employment exchange.

It is assumed that from then on, all you have to do is keep rising within the institution to reach the professional level for which they are trained, and reach positions of Librarian or documentaries, but the harsh reality is that almost nobody does. Once approved, the plaza, and the tranquility of a permanent position, we settled with the situation and we "funcionarizamos. Over time, come to our frustration, for not having followed strive to achieve the goal we set when we started the race and having settled for less. Years of study for what?

The second option that we can take further trained to perform professionally, it's no bed of roses. Supposed to continue the effort that took place during the race and continue studying, doing courses, masters, doctorates ... An investment of time and money that come with student life prolonging to infinity (and beyond). Hopefully, such training may also occur through the implementation of bursaries (which will also have to compete tooth and nail), so instead of paying, cobras, and where it will perform functions of a university graduate, it yes, with a salary of assistant and without any of the advantages of any contract: extra payments, social security, vacation, Moscoso, Settlement, the right to strike ...

The move from scholarship to scholarship, or perform specialized courses, makes you realize the infinite variety of functions that can be done with their training Librarian / Documentalist, the various job options, the many paths that can forward: this may be the best way to discover what you really want to do within the profession and then start fighting for it. Given the above, perhaps it may appear that this election is more reassuring, because it corresponds with the willingness to study the university we have certainly, but also implies a frustration, to reach a certain age and have not yet found stability professional economic and enjoyed by our fellow "workers".

Which of these two options is best? I do not know, nor do I think anyone knows, because for a living that would have both situations at once and so you can choose (which is impossible, unfortunately). I guess that depends on the timing, circumstances, priorities of each, if your work is "your life" or just something that "gives you to live" ... But I really think that the only option is to go with the instinct and not dwell on it because, whatever choice we make, we will feel frustrated for one reason or another: the inconsistency is inherent in the human condition.

I think one of the keys to managing the inherent frustration is not losing the sense of wonder and curiosity to learn, is the post that gives us life librarian. Thus, we can "study" and work together. There will be a very collegial way, but it is a good way to adapt and / or specialize. Although clear, who can continue studying ... always stand out either within this race and showing the versatility that distinguishes us.

  2. Catuxa says:

Message received ;) hard decision ... but things are easier when we are given, but also run the risk of becoming conformists, and stuck in the desmotización ...

The elections at this point, with degree in hand, which prefer a professional way or another, determine the future of our life, and there is where one empeiza to think ...

Aisssss that is sometimes hard to choose!

  3. Of course, the "ideal" situation is to continue formándote while working, but the reality is not always possible.
If training is just training, it is easier to reconcile with the work, but sometimes the best training comes as an internship or fellowship.

The decision made is important because what you will mark the next years of your life, but why has not an option "final"?

If you figure, finish, añitos doing some courses, testing jobs, scholarships ... you stand between 25-30 years and you still have a working life of at least 35 years (if they let you retire, of course). I think in all that time allows time to get tired of whatever path is taken.

We must change the mentality about it and consider a continuous evolution of the profession. Why not every 10 years? 10 years as a documentarian of the press, another 10 in 1 library, 10 others engaged in research ...
It seems much more interesting, though I also impossible :-(

  4. Mark Ros says:

"The dissent is inherent to the human condition - is absent in all cases, of course. Many people are conformist who aspire only to a parking officer to see them come.

On the work and further education, although I'm not aware of the situation Catuxa since this post is related to it, I believe that training is now a necessity. Our world, the information is evolving very quickly as we can not think only professionals stay in the management of documents, because increasingly, these are electronic documents and the management process is radically different.

Only those who are ready for change will survive and not necessarily with the knowledge acquired in college will. I said

  5. Sara says:

As comentais this profession is quite frustrating and undervalued. But as I've seen in a message depends on where you want to focus your working life. I finish the degree in library science with 22 years. Between jobs, career internship and fellowship, I have experienced different environments in which your career can get back on track: publishers, law firms, libraries, public libraries, wind power company, currently working in a training company for transporters. As you say is quite understated and I guess by not having to pay you more I have not had an administrative assistant when my degree should have the rank of assistant.

Nor can you dedicate yourself to what you wanted when you made the race, my dream was to be documentary in a media, when in one of the most prestigious in Spain as an intern my disappointment was tremendous, and I lasted only two months, which I and most people I know working on what comes out, and do not specialize in what they would like.

The truth is that given the current job insecurity are not only the documentary, but the majority of graduates who have to cope with low wages, oppositions that are allocated beforehand, doing tasks that do not correspond to your level .... And so to avoid extinction.

  6. And even through that "what emerges" is related to our profession, in most cases.
There are races where there is no possible way to work, or as a tender, in anything remotely like what one was formed.

  7. licenciaturaNO says:

in my point of view it is best to study and work at a time as far as possible, since I started the diploma until I was finished with half-time grants that allowed me to study and work.
Later, I enrolled in the degree of documentation that I am still, and while he combines my studies with work, I increasingly realize that I have learned as much or more in the work and scholarship in the university, and I also noticed that the degree, at least in the Complutense University, teachers are becoming less tolerant of people who can not attend classes, even for work purposes.
That is why each day I become more disenchanted with the University and its unfortunate teachers who teach rather than engage in roll call, make you sign with the DNI, mark papers with a picture of the form class, etc ...
    what could have!
Currently have caused a very negative effect on me, I entered with pleasure in diplommatura, I learned things, I finished, and my desire to keep learning have been truncated with the degree in which I have not learned anything worth mentioning, these gangsters, this bunch of impresentables ... maybe in 5 of degree (currently ongoing study) leave the race, I'm not sure how to approach it, but I think it is so important language teaching as "titulitis" that affects the degree, and indeed, in the current curriculum, the languages are undervalued.
My conclusion is that the curricula are not in line with the demands of work at all, and besides, what I still do not understand is how with 18 years of diploma treat you like an adult, and 28 in degree as to a child, ladies when we registered is because we want and we are responsible, but we can not attend their classes, we are working, hopefully you understand some ...
I apologize for the roll, but I had to vent, which is good to do ;-)

  8. Mark Ros says:

Tranquil @, if precisely what we like here are the billets-rolls.

    ;-)

Above all, do not despair, work getting an undergraduate degree is long but worth it, teachers may not be sympathetic to those who study and work, but you must remember that student teaching is required to attend. That yes, there to spend and the school list ...

And no one doubts that more work is learned that in college, and is more valuable a job that a post at a desk in a classroom, everyone knows that practice need not conform with theory.

    Suerte y ánimo.

  9. myself says:

I have not yet finished reading the article, li imprimi to do so, but the fact is that we have a difficult job.
I graduated in 2001 and have been lucky enough to work but I look 18 months ago and there is no work. The last I heard was that people searching for my city Public Library and unemployment were called and since my was not called me to ask. Then I learn that?, They do not want people with university degrees but who have taken courses on the radio 'or so. Then I saw the working hours and saw more clearly, a person not entitled bully will leave that way.
We must fight for our rights and get our work puesstos that are not licensed in history, which I can not think of giving history class ever.
    I encourage all

  10. The situation is very complicated because our degree, even a professional training module are required to practice this profession.
I too have been lucky and have not stopped since I finished my diploma, I could also combine a degree with work, but every time I turn more aware of how little valued they are and how anyone can pass before us without preparation adequate.
YA need a college that support us and avoid the intrusion. College, college, college!

  11. licenciaturaNO says:

Maria Elena, and how about the adventure of combining a degree with your work, know if you have a flexible schedule, you work more than 7-8 hours, or if you are forced to attend class and there are students first and students second in your University ...
I would like to know, and if possible, know what your university ...
    thanks

  12. licenciaturaNO says:

Sorry, http://www.upv.es/, I realized ..., but I want to know the policy of this university, as we are.

  13. In Valencia the race is a little Iliad: the diploma is a student at the University of Valencia and the degree (only the last 2 courses) at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The Diploma (or at least when I did it) is done in a day which can be from 8 am to 8 pm, with breaks, of course, but about 3 days a week. Or you have a work schedule for individual days or weekend work or miss class, there is another way of managing it. Then it worked.

The degree is all evenings except some optional, which is reconciled with a job tomorrow as I was: working from 8am to 3am and went to class from 4 to 9 am of the night. The problem of the UPV is that all subjects are compulsory practice with what you can not afford to miss almost any kind. The pace is deadly to all I had to do the 2 degree courses at double time.

Luckily I'm done and I survived!

  14. Ashurita says:

The truth is that I've been very lucky in my career. I finished last year the Diploma in Library and Information Science in Zaragoza, I still managed to intern with a teacher and introduce myself ne life and work, work some findes Serviciod and documentation in a regional newspaper and continues to shape, to get me a degree, to through the UOC.

  15. Teresa Perez says:

    Hi:

Currently I am finishing 2nd degree in the University of Valencia and the truth is that few days ago'm quite discouraged.

    I will explain why.
The library of the University of Valencia has got 7 seats to public tender in which not only is not a requirement to be a graduate degree in Library or Documentation, but neither one nor the other gives any kind of point worthy of recognition or gaining access to the post. Therefore, access is more likely to put an engineer or a doctor to have a higher than me, sad Diploma Project, which I will be at least three years in college, so then anyone can buy the agenda of the opposition and can access the post.

What I mind I chose to study subjects that I choke? What mood I enroll in third? I have days off during the week because if I'm in class, I'm at work (as you have said up here, the time in Valencia is a mess), I am constantly exhausted and now do not even have the incentive that I will have more possibilities of working in what I like ...

    Anyway ...

  16. Hol [Comment ID # 3920 Will Be Quoted Here]

    Hi Teresa

You're right that is completely unfair that our degree is not required to access these library spaces, but since they are of C can be accessed either with BUP. It is what it is.
Consider that at least you have the advantage that you know the whole syllabus, and you have mastered the latest. Study is not the same opposition when you have no knowledge on the subject, when you're studying that program is right for the job.
I know the schedule is really harmful UV, I too have suffered. But he said, all you have studied this past year and what agenda will study next is that you know.
Good luck and surely we will be opposition. ;-)
