Increasingly often, the media expose on the news that the search results, so let it provides to a query to support the importance of a certain trend, or popular character emerging phenomenon. This practice was the subject of our reflection on an earlier text, but I think she should come back to say that these data are based on a deliberate lie.

A lie that is a marketing strategy of the three major search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing-Old Live, MSN-old) to try to capture users by offering a greater number of results. We must not forget that the task of indexing the entire Web is a daunting task that may never be able to get. In fact, Google long noted the number of pages that were indexed in their databases, but withdrew the data from its homepage. The fact is that the completeness of information retrieval, as a component seemed to prove the veracity of moving the idea who had the largest database could offer, at last, after all, better results.

Last week I attended the day Innovative technological monitoring systems provided by Prudencio Herrero held at the Valencia Chamber of Commerce showed me that there are still people with a critical view of technology that surrounds us. As a game, we taught the big lie of the search engines where what counts is the appearance.

The exercise suggested we went to look for different ways the concept of Surveillance Technology in its various forms:

  • technological surveillance
  • Technology Watch
  • "Technology Watch"
  • 'Technology watch'

The searches were to be dealt with at different search engines in its various forms, obtaining outstanding results. First, we should compare the results with the various terms in each of the search engines, for later comparison:

Google

Yahoo!

Bing

technological surveillance

2,080,000

3,750,000

315,000

Technology Watch

615,000

3,490,000

315,000

"Technology Watch"

157,000

925,000

1,810,000

'Technology watch'

158,000

826,000

1,810,000

As we can see, the results are shown as somewhat different depending on how to undertake the search and yet completely false and unable to prove, because search engines generally do not give us more than the first 1000 results.

So, why not search for something specific, try the book and Ramon Maspons Escorsa Pere, "Technology Watch and Competitive Intelligence" technology watch using Equation escorsa Maspons and we check how far we get. We must remember that reached a certain point, search engines invite us to perform the search again without the removal of some very similar results that are automatically skipped, but still from the initial amount that's being offered up for the real recovered the last page, the results are dwindling.
