"What would Google do?" By Jeff Jarvis

What would Google do? We have mentioned on occasion to Jeff Jarvis, the former staunch supporter of Google, goes these days a little disappointed with the release of SideWiki, a new implementation of the Google Toolbar that allows users to comment on a website either by using the Resources giant's Mountain View. Fundamentally, Jarvis says that the big G is appropriating one of the main features of the Social Web, Conversation, breaking it and breaking it, making him without respect to the generators of content they watch one of their main attractions, the interaction with its readers , vanishes. Of course, to this criticism, the comments that Jarvis has received have been through the irony to the resignation. Thus, his readers have reminded that anyone who uses that had defended the search of the contents of the media, see how their words turn against him, and the arguments that assert that conversation, the flag which peaked with Web 2.0, it is highly fragmented from long ago.

However, before Jarvis was located in this apparent crisis of faith, published a book, What would Google do?, That while seeming to invite his title to it, their goal is not to review the history or the benefits of Google as an organization , but rather make the consideration of how firms should behave in this new world in which the form has positioned himself as king. In fact, Jarvis made an inventory of the benefits already studied in the Web 2.0 and the subsequent Social Web, analyzing examples like what happened in the media and companies have turned to the web to improve its products as Dell.

Jarvis as a good blogger tells how his bad experience with the after sales service from Dell was invited to write a post on his blog, a tantrum if you will, which resulted in a call from the same company to try to quell the fire on his credibility that this text had caused.

Thus, those like me, we move into the book looking for something more than Google's strategy, the evisceration of its functioning, milestones, etc., we will be somewhat dissatisfied with the formal approach to the text since At last, after all, Jarvis made a statement of fact, errors and corrections made by companies within the Web, then try to work out what they should do other sectors beyond technology, beyond the news that both known , to propose an exit, a savoir-faire for what lies ahead. However, Jarvis approach discourages the reader and handled in such boundaries, feeling that the above and is more than trite and that going further, envisioning the future in different sectors may not be as indicated using the hook Google as a force for book sales. And is that the author dares to discuss the approach that would give the sale of toilet paper across the Web. Of course he would not dare to as "toilet paper" and that it would conduct a new approach to the product description. How to sell something as if it was not? That should leave it to marketers, but the examples we have in the juice is not juice or milk product that is more than yogurt.

In any case, this humble reader is enveloped in a short time in speculating on how to sell a new product reinventing his approach to the market, reaching those who clean the cups automated real ass of its users without using soap and water . After all, Will Smith has one of those cups at $ 5000. And in this, I can only raise an eyebrow and just like the good infoxicado, announcing "this is very interesting, but do not have time to read it."

Steve Jobs, made exquisite talent

Let this time I deviate from the main issues we deal in this blog and that we can devote a few lines to one of the leading visionaries in the computer world of our time: Steve Jobs. Because despite everything, the most and the least, has ever stopped to try his luck with a product from the Cupertino company, either on display at work or through a friend.

For my part, the first time I laid my hands on a Mac was in the Faculty of History at the University of Valencia, around 1997 in the computer room. At that time, the operation of this classroom at the School, was essentially based on the assault, that is, more or less like the gates of the English Court on the first day of sales, while the elbow is repeated every day in the morning and after lunch when he reopened the classroom. In any case, this should not lead to surprise, since, given that we had, so students of the University email us had to sign the application, a teacher, the penetration of new technologies at the Faculty was very scarce. In any case, I imagine in the School of Computer march things far more advanced, but who knows.

Levante-EMV como documentalista. Despite this, it was not until 2000 when I really started to work with Mac Of course, after coming to work in the newspaper "Levante-EMV as a documentarian. Directorios , que era la forma antigua de denominar las Carpetas en el viejo MS-DOS, mientras que los Maqueros ya andaban con ese concepto desde hacía diez años antes, desde 1984. It goes without saying that the head of the Documentation section, Alfonso Rodero, was a Macintosh enthusiast and always smiled when I spoke Directory, which was the old way of naming the folders in the old MS-DOS, while the Maquera and went with that concept for over ten years before, since 1984.

Of course, if there is something we owe to Steve Jobs media users is its ability to fully understand. Knows to be just in the position of an average user of the computer, ie one who is afraid to touch anything on your computer in case "breaks", and achieve an intuitive product and yet visually appealing to users. In fact, the biggest Apple innovations have occurred while he has commanded, in the first period from 1976 to 1985 and then, since his return in 1996 to the present.

Windows 3.0 , hasta seis años después en 1990 y que curiosamente la compañía de Redmond ha seguido ofreciendo licencias de uso hasta hace bien poco. To get an idea of what their vision seasoned, the first computer to the mainstream with an operating system using the user interface based on windows and a computer, which almost could not live today, it was marketed by Jobs in 1984 under the name Macintosh, while Microsoft will not launch its most stable operating system with a graphical interface like the Windows 3.0, until six years later in 1990 and interestingly the Redmond company has continued to offer licenses for use until recently.

Following the departure of Jobs, the Apple brand grew for a while, but was unable to push other operating systems, Windows staying with the vast majority of mass market. Outside of Apple, Jobs continued to work, tried to launch a new computer that is currently considered advanced for its time, NeXT Computer, yet his idea did not catch due to high costs the same. In 1996, NEXT was acquired by Apple and Jobs would return to the company he had co-founded to try to remove the losses it was, but not before he helped the foundation of Pixar, a film company that would show they could do great films by computer animation.

The return of Jobs to Apple brought new vigor, as he closed projects a deficit, and have new ones. In his hands, the Mac again astonish the world with its new line iMac, compact desktops, which together made up the CPU to the monitor that sacrificed themselves for the first time the floppy drive, and the iBook a few new laptops designed for mass consumption. From his experience in NEXT, born a new operating system, Mac OS X held, while the assault would be raised to the multimedia market which would grow the iPod, which would result in selling music online with the iTunes Store and telecommunications terminals for the iPhone.

The vision of genius has been dissected and analyzed without really clarifying anything. But what is clear is that Jobs did not exist for half measures. Equally admired and feared for his subordinates Jobs are "geniuses" or "dumb" and no one can escape from a roller coaster of adjectives. Jobs' personal abuses are legendary: parks his Mercedes on the sites for disabled employees regularly leads to tears and fires them into fits of rage. But it is also fair to note that many of Apple's top executives have worked with him for years. How he manages for the coexistence of these opposite behaviors, creating spectacular effects of success, is a puzzle.

There is no doubt that Apple's brand is bound to his leadership, Jobs is the quintessence of the apple company and at the same time its Achilles heel, and his poor health, from his first cancer operation pancreas, apparently only clouds mean for the future of the company. At present, Jobs is sick withdrawn by the maximum activity by the head of Apple, as reported by Apple, a hormonal imbalance, although the rumors were unleashed last summer by its thinness. Jobs has delegated functions and has prepared a management team to address its low, but perhaps chastened by the first time I had surgery, the SEC urged to be informed about the health of Apple CEO that shareholders are not affected. The SEC requests personal information from top management to maintain an action, a further demonstration that the pair of the talent of Jobs and Apple results are indissoluble.

The documentary work in science

Among the different career paths we can choose to graduates in Library and Information Science, the option of documentary is perhaps the most unknown. Although there are common tasks and parallels with the work of a librarian or an archivist, thanks to our training, knowledge and skills as archivists we can completely perform tasks traditionally assigned away from our profession.

This ignorance has caused professionals in the information we have forged our path as documentarians have to constantly prove what our capabilities, what tasks we can perform, what is our value in a company or public institution. But it is not easy to justify our place in a tangible way and evaluate it in quantitative terms, so the documentation department usually offers an image of "bottomless pit" when weighing the costs and benefits in the enterprise: the result is always deficit.

It is true that in certain sectors have long documentary to do their work, as in the case of the documentation in the media, although the ease of access to information provided by the Internet and new technologies can lead to question their future . In other business areas, however, are just starting to show our worth in the performance of work as varied as knowledge management and technology watch, or participation in the creation and configuration of the intranet or corporate website, to give a few examples.

In my case, my work as a documentarian has been developed mostly in the public sector in the field of science and research, so I could check his own initiative or at least I caught a glimpse, the multiple job opportunities that this area has to offer us.

A s e n this blog we like to call attention to our job opportunities and information professionals, I wanted to use my experience in order to provide a small sample of the tasks we perform in science:

  • Surveillance technology (as in the business sector) in the competitive environment of our center or research group to monitor progress and projects being undertaken in the same area, able to use these to push themselves and not waste time and replication in a futile effort.
  • Report of financial aid that European, national and devolved offered to research groups for project development or procurement of scientific and support staff.

  • Detect (partly thanks to technology watch) the potential partners for the development of such research projects.
  • Locate and provide investigators with all necessary information to develop their investigative work.
  • Perform patent technology reports that may relate to the results obtained by researchers at our center, including support for technology transfer service, so you can determine if the results are prone to being patented.
  • Assist in the processing of information gained in the research for publication in both scientific and informative media.
  • Identify the most appropriate scientific journal for the publication, by its high visibility or high recognition in the scientific assessment.
  • Find the partners necessary for marketing the results of such projects.
  • And finally-not directly related to the research process, but to some extent with the grant aid or research projects, scientific assessment by bibliometric studies.

After the above enumeration of chores-that at no time intended to be exhaustive, we could have the false impression that the participation of archivists in the field of research is considered almost essential, but how many job offers for archivists in the field scientist can we find? How many in technology centers? How many research projects?

Reality shows us once again that our country is a certain gap with more advanced countries in the use of new information and communication technologies (and which we want to match), and therefore, perhaps, our model research has not yet been able to adapt to the current reporting process, in which the documentary can be another piece to solving the puzzle of Science.

Types of audits based on information

Based on the different methodologies developed for information management in organizations, we can classify each of them at different levels depending on the depth at which it comes to managing data, information and knowledge within organizations. In this way, we can summarize the various audits based on information in the following types:

  • The information systems audit investigates how technological tools are used to manage information resources.
  • The audit of communication because it focuses on organizational information flows.
  • The mapping of information (Information Mapping) focuses on the identification and use of information resources of the organization.
  • The information audit is the systematic analysis of information resources, their use, flow and management within the organization.
  • The knowledge audit, knowledge management is the highest level of information management and logically is the next step after conducting an audit of information and development of information management within an organization.
  • The audit of the intelligence relationship between the management of information and knowledge.

Business Communication 2.0 - The role of new social technologies in business communication strategy

Markets are conversations Cluetrain Manifesto proclaimed, though some have forgotten the pleasure of conversation. The World and constricts and expands according to the beat of the Web - forget the marketing concept of "2.0" - built in new ideas and concepts. Meanwhile business organizations face these changes, apparently wary of what can not, or know, control, considering that the last word is yours, forgetting that the vintage power of media, sometimes patronage, no longer rests on them. The last and turned off the light of a unidirectional model, it is time for us to realize that we are in darkness.

A model of communication to extinguish

The king is naked against a market that knows its secrets, where anyone can air our intimacies. Knew what was previously a handful of people who shared a coffee together, across borders and markets with only one of them has a place of publication and a search engine index your content and make it retrievable to anyone who is sufficiently bold for airearlo (See the example of Kryptonite locks and other). Hierarchies succumb under the weight of a new, decentralized power, where control can be exercised from an open and collaborative approach, where the prestige is built day by day with actions and not words. There is no control, but a strange order, the credit is built between peers.

The companies, their media representatives, face a new and apparently insecure habitat that evolves and redefines itself every day. Know and be able to use it is vital for them, for their market, customers and suppliers. Herrera nos ofrecen una guía para comprender esa nueva internet que se constituye bajo el poder del usuario y que aparentemente no tiene dueño. With these premises, Pau Herrera Javier Celaya and offer a guide to understanding this new Internet that is under the power user and with no apparent owner.

Business Communication 2.0 - The role of new social technologies in business communication strategy is an extension of study by the same authors The Blogs in Business Communication in Spain adapting to a more complex with the emergence of Web 2.0 and introduces us splendidly in the new world of communication that builds on the Internet today. incluyendo el nuevo papel de estos tanto como herramientas para la gestión de la información y de la comunicación; así como otros elementos ha tener en cuenta para establecer relaciones dentro de la Red. A la vez que se nos establecen una serie de puntos básicos para comenzar a establecer conversaciones en ella. Thus, they primarily discussed the blogosphere, but also other tools such as wikis including the new role of these both as tools for information management and communication, and other elements has taken into account in establishing relationships within While the network that we establish a series of points to begin establishing conversations in it.

Our clients are people who use the Web to learn and communicate, to share opinions, hobbies and tastes, wanting to participate in this conversation is our first step towards their loyalty and strengthen our corporate image. But of course, one must first learn, to adapt the format, experience and, above all, change our old conception of the market and how we communicate with him. Do not forget that our customers and competitors are already doing.

On the convergence

The term [Convergence] is still used mainly in the USA, where she gained unprecedented scale: covering five aspirations, from the financial to human. The convergence of capital states that media groups have the vocation to put all the means in their field. Technological convergence points to the trend following approach digital instruments to match within a single screen. The convergence of content that there is a version for each half of the same information and that only reunification offers comprehensive treatment. The convergence to group editorial newsrooms into a single entity that feed the different media. And finally, convergence demands a professional journalistic adapted to every means, capable of passing from one medium to another displaying the same talent.
